via Julia Franklin This snow has me thinking about vulnerability, belonging, what is left unsaid, and how we interpret this world. To think, this entire project began with a box of my father’s possessions discovered 26 years after his death. Why now? What would all those letters, ties and handkerchiefs reveal? Should I have transformed them into art and experience or kept them in storage? What should be public and what should be private? #pickingupthepieces #juliafranklinart #lettersofthepast #belongings #publicversusprivate #insideoutside

Picking Up The Pieces

Come experience and celebrate Julia’s exhibition during a reception for the artist on Friday, January 25 from 5-8pm in The Helene Center Galleries on the campus of Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa.

“Picking Up the Pieces” is an interactive art installation by Julia Franklin. She uses a single box of her father’s belongings to explore his now mysterious death and to better understand his identity as well as her own.

Julia recreates her childhood home and combines art with artifact to chronicle the life of her father. Visitors are invited to comb through drawers, read letters, play records, and crawl inside a blanket fort to find clues that may explain her father’s unexpected death.

The exhibition runs from January 14 - March 1, 2019. The galleries are open from 8am-5pm Monday through Friday and by appointment on the weekends. All events are free of charge.

A reading of Julia’s related play, “Keeping Up Appearances,” will take place on Friday, February 8 at 7:30pm in the space.

Make plans now to take a road trip to interact with this unique installation!

GALACTIC ATTIRE ENCOURAGED

A group of people wake from a collective dream and are inspired to travel to the moon. Guided by the once legendary Captain Rocket, the crew journeys through space - unaware of the evil that lurks among them.

Moonrock: The Musical is far from an ordinary show! It is a unique vision that displays the beauty of community, collaboration and interdependence. Moonrock: The Musical was conceived as a joke that one of the writers took seriously. That joke evolved into a professional production including a complete score with a cast and crew of several dozen talented people. Many of Ames' finest musicians, actors, singers, dancers, choreographers, directors, designers, engineers, writers, carpenters and artists have collaborated their passion and talent to bring this vision to life.

Moonrock: The Musical is a celebration of ordinary people coming together to create an extraordinary experience.

Written and produced by Ames artists Lyndsay Nissen and Sascha Antropov, Moonrock: The Musical will be performed one night only on January 20th to welcome the lunar eclipse!
