What Are You Doing For Art Week 2019?

This year marks the 5th annual Art Week Des Moines, a citywide celebration of the arts leading up to the Des Moines Arts Festival. This years dates are Friday, June 21st to Friday the 28th. In 2018, hundreds of artists participated and exhibited their work in over 60 events. Co-founder David Safris explains the inspiration for Art Week is to "to build a collective event that is bigger and better than anything one group could build on their own.” As a community, we build awareness about the amazing offerings provided by local studios, galleries and museums year-round.

Art Week is an open invitation for artists. To join the festivities, submit your event through this linkThe deadline to be included on any print promotion is May 8th. Paint a mural, exhibit your work, build an odd float and march through Downtown Des Moines - the possibilities are endless.

Iowa Women’s Art Exhibition Deadline Approaching

By placing the work of women center stage in the capitol building, the Iowa Women’s Art Exhibition emphasizes the powerful role art plays in the political process and protest. The program includes two semi-annual exhibits each year in the Governor’s office at the Iowa Capitol and selected artists receive an award. Currently, Lee Emma Running’s installation of prairie plants roots invites the natural environment into the conversations happening in the Office of the Governor of Iowa.

The deadline to apply is April 1.

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Des Moines Art Center curator Laura Burkhalter is joined by artist Larassa Kabel for a discussion of her exhibition The Elephant in the Room: Animal as Model. Kabel’s work uses the bodies of dead animals to consider our distance from death in the modern world and the unease that comes from interacting with it closely. Presented as a series of photographs, Kabel will describe her artistic process and inspiration for her work.
