Gustafson Retrospective at the "Drink Gallery with Art"

Sandra Gustafson, The Lift

April/May 2012

It takes a lot to distract this girl from a well-crafted cocktail, but as I sat at The Lift on Saturday night, my attention was drawn from my Manhattan to the art surrounding me.  The Lift, charmingly known as “A Drink Gallery With Art”, is currently featuring the work of local artist Sandra Gustafson.

The show, a retrospective of the last six years of Gustafson’s work, offers viewers an intimate glimpse into various eras of the artist’s life.  The elders of the show are large, colorful paintings – part of a true study of color that Gustafson embarked on during the years beginning the restrospective.  Next comes a lovely series of delicate swirls of ink and watercolor pencils done on paper while the artist was on bed rest, awaiting the birth of her son.  Yet another grouping draws on the history of Gustafson’s family, incorporating bits of postcards from the ‘40s and ‘50s that the artist inherited from her grandmother.  Most recently, the artist has delved even further into the world of mixed media, using the skills of her husband, who is a wood worker.  These pieces include a large scale mobile and pieces in multiple thin wood frames gracefully dangling in sequence.

The retrospective at The Lift, at 222 4th Street in Des Moines, will be on display until the end of May.  Gustafson’s work can also be seen at Friedrich’s Coffee on 42nd street, and she is currently working on a mural for Shakti Yoga Shop at The Shops on Roosevelt.  Gustafson’s website is:
