Iowa Arts Blackout
On January 30th, 2017 a group of artists and art activists gathered at the Iowa State Capitol to protest the draining of the 6.1 million dollar Cultural Trust Fund through the Appropriations bill SB 130 (previously known as HF 118). The group included painters, printmakers, photographers, filmmakers, musicians, art educators, sculptors, visual artists, stage actors, playwrights, composers, and art advocates.
The Cultural Trust fund has recently helped to provide grants for organizations like the Des Moines Metro Opera, Riverside Theatre, Science Center of Iowa, and the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. The program provides funding to assist cultural organizations in instituting best practices while developing strategic and fundraising plans.
Later that evening the Iowa House of Representatives passed SB 130 (previously known as HF 118) by a vote of 58-38, approving the budget and the measure to drain the Cultural Trust Fund.
