Who’s exhibiting and opportunities for artists

An art auction exhibition highlighting the PAST (but for the FUTURE) of PUBLIC SPACE ONE - a brief, recent history of underground art in Iowa City (fb event link)

Nearly 100 art exhibitions have taken place at PS1 in the past 7 years. Post Facto Future (Aug 28-Sept 12, 2015) is an exhibition in celebration of our small ‘a’ art community and its continuum. This is a dual-purpose show: at once a showcase of the excellent artists we have had the pleasure to work with in the past as well as a return of our annual art auction (these participating past artists have submitted a work as an offering for the future of the space). The show will feature a plethora of work available to supporters in the form of a sealed-bid, silent auction as well as archives, documentation, and a few surprises. This is a great opportunity to get affordable artwork, learn about, and support a great institution simultaneously.

Leading-up to and during the exhibition we will be offering glimpses of past shows and profile many of the artists involved. There will be a reference section (housed in the remains of Sanstress) dedicated to “public information” on the artists who have one time or another presented, performed, or supported PS1 as put together by our current gallery team and volunteers. Information will be available on many of our great past, present and future projects including SOUP, Free @rt School, Iowa City Press Co-op, the Studio Residency Program, the Kitchen at PS1, and PS1projects as well as information about joining our various teams (gallery, music, etc) and board.

Opening: The exhibition and auction open online ( and in the space at 7pm on Friday, August 28th. An opening reception will take place in the gallery from 7-8:30pm that day. A short program (15 minutes) on the history of the gallery and artists who have shown at PS1 will begin at 7:30, presented by Program Director Kalmia Strong.

Closing: The closing celebration will take place on Saturday, September 12th from 7-8:30pm. The Sustaining Membership Pour and Recognition Ceremony will conclude the exhibition at 8:30pm.

Sealed Bidding Silent Auction: The artwork in the exhibition was donated as a fundraiser for the PS1 gallery. Sealed bidding will end online and in the gallery at 8:30 pm on Saturday, September 12th. Winning bidders will be contacted and announced in the following week. Participants do not need to be present to win. All proceeds go towards PS1 and the future of our arts programming. More info on the online portion of the auction:

Sustaining Membership Pour and Recognition Ceremony: In recognition of our newly official 501©3 nonprofit status, we will be holding an ongoing “Membership Pour” during the two weeks the exhibition is open: sustaining donors (of any amount) will be honored as a member and offered the chance to add a streak (drip, flow, dribble) of paint to our member’s wall. (Current and past members will be recognized in the closing day ceremony, with new, individuated paint spills.)

Public Space One has been an Iowa City artist-run institution for 12 years, programming noncommercial, installation-based contemporary art for the last seven. This summer the organization stepped out from under other fiscal sponsors’ umbrellas  (The James Gang & Legion Arts) and became its own 501©3 nonprofit entity. It is located on the lower level of the Wesley Center at 120 N. Dubuque St in Iowa City, IA and online at
