EJ Frye’s “Reusing Abuse”
OL Guild 201 4th St.West Des Moines, Iowa
Response by Rachel Buse, May 20, 2018
OL Guild is an old Valley Junction gas hut turned installation space. Through it’s large windows, EJ Frye’s body-like assemblages hang like slaughtered meat. She twisted and stuffed clusters out of plastic bags collected from her local grocery store. Crispy brown paper surrounds the pustules like loose skin.
In her approach, she flaunts the design qualities of each bag. They are arranged by print and color. The language on the bags offers lighthearted messages as well as caution. You can read them like self-contradicting poems. The fruits in this forest don’t ripen.
“Reusing Abuse” is a fit against our epidemic of plastic consumption. Why bring your own bag when plastic is given so freely? The single use transport from store to the fridge is so handy. Frye hopes we’ll reconsider our acceptance of petroleum-based disposables. “Please leave here knowing you’re making a difference using a cloth reusable shopping bag. And if you’re not, please start.”
On view for the rest of May. OL Guild is on block east of Olson-Larsen Galleries in Valley Junction. Drive by and peak in, especially after dark.
