On Friday, July 10, Moberg Gallery premieres “Make Their Gold Teeth Ache”, a gathering of works by artists seeking to provide illumination on racial identity, awareness, and inequality.

The collection, which includes works by artists from Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Chicago, and other U.S. cities, is curated by Des Moines native and globally acclaimed artist, Jordan Weber.  Weber, whose most recent installations, “American Dreamers” and “American Dreamers Phase 2” appeared in New York and Los Angeles respectively, explains the concept of the show:

When whites develop the ability to see their racial positions from the perspectives of people of color, then this multilateral double consciousness can enable a form of critical interracial dialogue within the walls of art spaces. My goal with this exhibition is to assert a provocative array of work to stimulate our thinking on this important contemporary topic with deep historical roots.

“Make Their Gold Teeth Ache” includes works from artists John Sims, Dread Scott, Rico Gatson, Mitchell Squire, Loren Holland, Eliza Myrie, Kohshin Finley, and Delfin Finley.  The show runs from July 10 through August 22 at Moberg Gallery in Des Moines.  Opening Reception is Friday, July 10.

On June 26, the Interrobang Film Festival opens in the downtown library with over fifty films from around the world. Entering its eighth year, this year’s festival will have greater audience involvement than ever before.

Festival producer Kristian Day says, “This year, we are focusing on creating a more interactive festival.  Audiences will have the opportunity to meet the creative forces behind the films at the Midwest Filmmaker Discussion Panel, and can take part in the vote for the Audience Choice selection.  In addition, we have included vendor tables and concessions outside the screening rooms for our audience’s convenience and comfort.”

This year, notable selections include Frank Green’s critically acclaimed feature, “Wildlike”, and Meryl Goldsmith’s controversial documentary, “The Syndrome,” which screens Friday afternoon, with the filmmaker in attendance.

Highlights of the weekend include the Mobile Innovation Screening, featuring short films created using mobile phones, followed by an iPhone Filmmaking Workshop.  In addition, author Marty Knepper, will host a lecture and book signing of her new work, “The Book of Iowa Films”.

The Interrobang Film Festival begins at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 26.  The awards ceremony will be at 3:00 on Sunday, June 28.  All schedule details can be found at the Des Moines Arts Festival website.
