Toy (with) Animals : Anna Segner

Anne Segner’s MFA installation looks at the commodification of animal bodies through the exaggerated and lifeless bodies of classic toys. “Through reading texts in critical animal studies, I gained interest in the aesthetic exploitation of animal bodies. I became increasingly aware of the disconnect between human love for animal media (toys, décor, mascots, aesthetics, etc) and the misfortune that animals face often at the hand of humans, said Anne. “I landed on the toy subject because toys reflect the values of a society, and so many toys are animal-based and outrageously far from anatomical correctness, which is a concerning misrepresentation of animal reality.”

The exhibit will feature an installation, paintings, and mixed media work by the artist at Design on Main on Friday, March 29 from 5-8pm.
