Next on the walls of Mars Cafe you’ll see paintings by Jessica Calhoun. The opening reception is Friday, August 11th from 5:00pm - 8:00 pm.

In an interview with the Girl Gang, Jessica talked about painting portraits:

“Humans have so much depth to them, I love to paint people because they are so complex. I attempt to interpret the human experience through contemporary portraits because the way we live life is so messy and beautiful.” Read and see more here.

It’s a good time to remember why we need and love our state’s arts agency, the Iowa Arts Council. The IAC was founded in 1967, two years after President Lyndon Johnson signed the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act, declaring: “Art is a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is in our works of art that we reveal ourselves, and to others, the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.”
